Fish
/We dove down deep into the ocean for this week’s theme: FISH
BOOKS:
We read The Pout-Pout Fish by Deborah Diesen, illustrated by Dan Hanna and Little Fish and Mommy by Lucy Cousins.
WARM-UPS:
It’s not a fish story time if you don’t sing “A Slippery Fish” and “Baby Shark,” so those were our warm-ups for the day.
“A Slippery Fish” which I learned from Jbrary
We start out by putting our hands together to make a fish and wiggling them back and forth. When you get to “Gulp! Gulp! Gulp!” make big jaws with your arms and pretend to eat the fish.
A slippery fish, a slippery fish
Swimming in the water
A slippery fish, a slippery fish
Gulp! Gulp! Gulp!
Oh no! It’s been eaten by…..
Wriggle your arms up and down like tentacles for the octopus.
An octopus, an octopus
Wriggling in the water
An octopus, an octopus
Gulp! Gulp! Gulp!
Oh no! It’s been eaten by…..
Touch your fingers together and move your body from side to side like you’re a bigger fish.
A tuna fish, a tuna fish
Flashing in the water
A tuna fish, a tuna fish
Gulp! Gulp! Gulp!
Oh no! It’s been eaten by…..
Put your hands together over your head to make a shark fin. Move around sneakily like a shark.
A great white shark, a great white shark
Lurking in the water
A great white shark, a great white shark
Gulp! Gulp! Gulp!
Oh no! It’s been eaten by…..
Make your arms into a big circle in front of you and move back and forth like you’re a huge whale!
A humongous whale, a humongous whale
Spouting in the water
A humongous whale, a humongous whale
Gulp! Gulp! Gulp!…..BURP!
Excuse me!
“Baby Shark” - while Baby Shark was popularized by Pink Fong, I learned it also from Jbrary and delighted in singing it until every parent everywhere would have murdered me if they had had to hear it one more time. It’s been a minute, so I’m slowly bringing it back. There are a million options for verses here, so use what you’d like.
Make a mouth with one of your hands and open and shut it as we sing.
Baby shark, doot doo doot doot doo doot
Baby shark, doot doo doot doot doo doot
Baby shark, doot doo doot doot doo doot
Baby shark
Put both of your hands together and open and shut them to make a slightly bigger shark.
Mama shark, doot doo doot doot doo doot
Mama shark, doot doo doot doot doo doot
Mama shark, doot doo doot doot doo doot
Mama shark
Curl your fingers into your palms and open and shut them for Grandpa! Poor Grandpa has no teeth.
Grandpa shark, doot doo doot doot doo doot
Grandpa shark, doot doo doot doot doo doot
Grandpa shark, doot doo doot doot doo doot
Grandpa shark
Make your elbows touch and open up your forearms and hands for Daddy Shark
Daddy shark, doot doo doot doot doo doot
Daddy shark, doot doo doot doot doo doot
Daddy shark, doot doo doot doot doo doot
Daddy shark
Use your whole arms to make giant shark jaws!
Great white shark, doot doo doot doot doo doot
Great white shark, doot doo doot doot doo doot
Great white shark, doot doo doot doot doo doot
Great white shark
Move your arms like you’re swimming
Going swimming, doot doo doot doot doo doot
Going swimming, doot doo doot doot doo doot
Going swimming, doot doo doot doot doo doot
Going swimming
Put your hands together and put them over your head like a shark fin
See a shark, doot doo doot doot doo doot
See a shark, doot doo doot doot doo doot
See a shark, doot doo doot doot doo doot
See a shark
Move your arms really really fast!
Swimming fast, doot doo doot doot doo doot
Swimming fast, doot doo doot doot doo doot
Swimming fast, doot doo doot doot doo doot
Swimming fast
Wipe your forehead off like you’ve been sweating
Safe at last, doot doo doot doot doo doot
Safe at last, doot doo doot doot doo doot
Safe at last, doot doo doot doot doo doot
Safe at last
Wave good bye!
Bye-bye shark, doot doo doot doot doo doot
Bye-bye shark, doot doo doot doot doo doot
Bye-bye shark, doot doo doot doot doo doot
Bye-bye shark
Then we listened to “Down by the Ocean” by Bari Koral and made all kinds of action along with the animals Bari sings about.
PROP AND INSTRUMENT SONGS:
We busted out the extra large stretchy band from Bear Paw to do two action songs:
“Swimming Up and Down”
to the tune of “Bumpin’ Up and Down”
Swimming up and down in the big blue ocean
Swimming up and down in the big blue ocean
Swimming up and down in the big blue ocean
Won’t you swim with me?
Verse 2: Floating
Verse 3: Jumping
Verse 4: Diving
“The Waves in the Sea”
to the tune of “The Wheels on the Bus”
The waves in the sea go up and down
Up and down, up and down
The waves in the sea go up and down
All day long
Then we moved our stretchy band like different kinds of waves - gentle waves, windy, choppy waves, and tidal waves!
To wrap up our instrument section, we drummed along with “Narwhal Unicorn of the Sea” by Emily Arrow.
CLOSING ACTIVITIES:
Our freeze dance this week was “Swim Like a Fish” by the Wiggles.
To stretch, we sang “One Little Sea Star” from Nancy Stewart. We made our bodies into star shapes by stretching our arms out wide and having straight legs spread apart and then rocked from foot to foot. When the tide rolled in and out, we rolled our hands and leaned in and out.
One pretty sea star
Spreads its arms
And clings to the rocks
Beneath my feet
The tide rolls in
And rolls out again
Two little sea stars
I can see
